Humping rocks, stones and bags filled with sand, exercising waist deep in the sea and sprinting along the shoreline would not appear to be an ideal pastime for the fair sex.

But females of all ages are lapping up fitness training with a difference in the Cardigan area under the watchful eye of former rugby player and coach Derek Burton of St Dogmaels.

Fitness enthusiast Derek launched Cavegirl Training earlier in the summer with a handful of women taking part in weekly training sessions at Mwnt beach and Poppit sands.

In no time word got around and last week more than 50 participated in a gruelling 90 minutes workout at Mwnt using natural resources as equipment.

Surprised at the overwhelming response to the innovative fitness training former Cardigan RFC hooker Derek said “I introduced Cavegirl Training as a bit of fun for women to improve their fitness. But it has taken off in a big way with more taking part every week.”

A 40’s something woman who turned up out of curiosity said “I didn’t know what to expect but to be honest I found it great fun although it was extremely demanding and I was sore for several days.”

With the oncome of autumn the beach training sessions are coming to an end but Derek has devised a street training scheme in Cardigan which is set to start shortly.

There are also plans to visit The Big Dipper at Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes, Bridgend and transport for this is being sponsored by Robert Davies Motors.

Training at Mwnt takes place on Tuesday at 6.30pm and a warm welcome is extended to all.
