A local village hall is calling for support for an ambitious project to give young people in the community a place of their own.

St Dogmaels Village Hall is raising funds to build a new extension, to provide an area for the Youth Club.

The estimated cost of the project is £54,000. An initial application has been made to the Big Lottery Fund, and the 200 Club is inviting donations towards the project’s costs.

The club currently meets at the local primary school, but is unable to put up notice boards or personalise an area as everything has to be cleared away when they leave.

Youth Club leader Lisa Head : “They meet in the school hall at the moment. It’s a great space, however it’s a primary school, and we cater for 11 to 18 year-olds, the last place they want to go after a long day at school is back to the little school.

“What they need is ownership of their own place, to personalise it and become involved in how it looks.”

The club is now in its fourth year following its re-launch, after years of the village being without a youth club, and regularly has around 14 members attending on Tuesdays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm (resuming on September 30).

Penny Rees, hall committee fundraiser, said: “It’s very exciting. Having the youth club in the hall could break barriers down between people of different ages, and they can learn different things from each other and share skills.”

Lisa added: “Having their own space will open up lots of possibilities.”
