Disappointment has been voiced that Yr Hafod Day Centre in Cardigan will not be getting a new extension to help house the Canolfan Meugan learning disabilities service.

Canolfan Meugan users have sharing the facilities at Yr Hafod with elderly day centre users since their building was demolished. Plans for a new Canolfan Meugan had to be scrapped due to austerity budget cuts.

There have been complaints that the shared facilities are too cramped and plans were drawn up for an extension.

But now that plan has been put on hold with existing rooms at Yr Hafod being reconfigured to provide extra space.

"I'm very disappointed," local county councillor John Adams-Lewis told this week's Ceredigion cabinet meeting.

"The reason we agreed to the demolition of Canolfan Meugan was the promise that an extension would be built at Yr Hafod."

But Cabinet member for social services, Cllr Catherine Hughes, said budget cuts made an extension impossible.

"These services are not statutory. I know it's not what local people want to hear but if we can restructure the building it will be of benefit."

She added that £200k had been earmarked for the work.

Council leader Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn said: "We have to cut our cloth and give priority to statutory matters."
