There will be festive cheer for shoppers in Ceredigion after the county council gave the go-ahead for free parking on the three Saturdays before Christmas.

This week's Cabinet nodded the scheme through - in stark contrast to last year's battle for the free days.

Cabinet member Cllr Alun Williams said: "I'm not sure there is evidence that it increases footfall but traders have made it clear that they value the scheme."

Cllr Elizabeth Evans said there was evidence it attracted shoppers.

"It definitely makes a difference and I welcome this," she said.

And Cllr John Adams-Lewis added: "Local traders will be very happy about this."

* Cardigan is also gearing up for the festive season with the town's Christmas lights set to be switched on on Thursday November 27 at 5pm. Traders will open late that night to start the Christmas shopping rush. The town loyalty card will also be launched for the festive period. Following on from the week-long success of the Support Your High Street scheme, the loyalty card period will be extended from November 27 to December 22. The prizewinning draw will take place on Monday, December 22 when traders will again open late for last-minute Christmas shopping.
