‘Innocent as Strawberries’ is the famous and slightly odd simile from Dylan Thomas’ poem ‘The Hunchback in the Park’ and this was the title of the play that Year Nine Pupils from Dyffryn Teifi went to see at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. They were also treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Library, even venturing down to the vaults.
The visit was completely funded by Theatr Arad Goch and The National Library of Wales. The pupils were mesmerised by the fast paced play that traced the lives of three teenage boys growing up in South Wales. It was a performance that traced the loss of innocence; it was not all serious, there were laughs aplenty too.
The tour of the Library was a complete eye-opener; the vast collections of books, magazines, newspapers, paintings, photographs and manuscripts were shown to the pupils. As you can imagine, some were kept under lock and key – the most valuable being an original Chaucer manuscript.
A great day out, enjoyed by pupils and staff.
