A packed evening of entertainment by prominent local artists was held in Cardigan this week, to support Mike Parker’s bid to become Plaid Cymru’s next MP for Ceredigion.

The event, organized by the party’s Cardigan and district branch at Polly’s Bistro, featured TV personality and Tresaith resident Dewi ‘Pws’ Morris, prominent local band Ail Symudiad, prize-winning poet Ceri Wyn Jones, and harpist Carwyn Tywyn.

Speaking at the event, Mike Parker, who is a self-employed travel writer and broadcaster, gave a snapshot of historical descriptions of Cardigan. He said,

"Cardigan was described 800 years ago as ‘the key to Wales’. Some writers have been less kind, but I’ve always loved its unique atmosphere, and its outward-looking attitude as an old port with links around the world. Its cultural role has always been huge, and it’s got a great future as the castle once again becomes a public focus for the town centre."

He also set the scene for the forthcoming General Election, which polls suggest could lead to another hung parliament and greatly increased support for smaller parties. Plaid Cymru candidate Mike Parker said,

"With support for the two big parties at its lowest point since the Second World War, and the Lib Dems in freefall, the arithmetic of the next parliament is unpredictable. Another hung parliament is likely, which offers the chance for Plaid and other parties to play a significant role.

"The SNP, the Greens and Plaid have worked together in this Parliament, often forming the only effective opposition to the Government. As the new SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said last week, an enhanced group of perhaps 40 SNP, Plaid and Green MPs could form a powerful progressive force, to demand the more equal distribution of wealth and prosperity, a more sustainable future, and the scrapping of Trident nuclear weapons."

Mike Parker thanked the artists who took part in the event. He added,

"It was a hugely entertaining evening, and I’m honoured that so many people gave of their time freely. Thank you also to Polly’s Bistro for hosting the event. I’m sure that this new restaurant venture will go from strength to strength."
