UP to 85 tractors attended the 25 mile tractor run in the village of Maenclochog recently to remember baby Ifan Wyn Williams who passed away at only a month old.

Ifan, born on January 19 this year, the son of Wyn and Catrin Williams, was diagnosed with Necrotising Enterocolitis at a month old, and died on February 19.

The tractor run followed by a family fun afternoon was well supported and not only raised the huge sum of £8,500 to date, divided between the neonatal department at Singleton Hospital and Action Medical Research, but also raised awareness of the condition.

"Catrin gave birth at 27 weeks at Singleton Hospital in Swansea. Ifan was only two pounds, two ounces being born and was perfect in every way. Within a month he'd gained weight to three pounds, four ounces. He was doing well until he got this infection," explained father Wyn.

And Catrin added: "The condition mainly affects premature babies. It is an infection which affects a baby's intestines. It's a serious condition and as in Ifan's case can be fatal. About 3000 babies in the UK every year have this condition and sadly 35% of these will die. The £4,250 raised towards Action Medical Research, a charity that looks into childhood illnesses, will be used specifically for research into Necrotising Enterocolitis."

The tractors all travelled from Maenclochog, Llangolman, Mynachlogddu, around Crymych, Crosswell and Brynberian.

"We’d like to thank everyone who participated on the day. I hope we’ve raised awareness of the illness and hope the money donated will help other babies who suffer from Necrotising Enterocolitis to get better from the condition. Thank you to everyone who made a donation and made Ifan's day a huge success," said Catrin.
