A former Cardigan woman, who puts her longevity down to great friends, being energetic and a daily glass of wine with lunch, celebrated her 100th birthday last Tuesday, May 12.

Eileen Williams, a former Harvey Nichols house model, was holidaying in Llangranog in the summer of 1934 when she met Cardigan man Wynford Williams, who ran Owen Williams Bus Company.

The two were married on Valentine's Day the following year and had three children, Gareth, Dawn and Ann, two of whom still live locally.

Mrs Williams was an active member of Cardigan WI, the town's Mothers' Union and the British Legion. She lived in the town for more than 30 years, moving to Swansea in the 1970s.

She was always very active; in her girlhood she represented her school in tennis and netball. In adulthood she loved walking and swimming, having learnt to swim in her 60s during a world cruise.

Aged 100 she is still very energetic, enjoying bingo three times a week, cards once a week and attending a weekly luncheon club where she meets up with friends.

A grandmother of eight and great grandmother of 11, Mrs Williams celebrated her 100th birthday with a family luncheon on Saturday, May 9.

On her birthday the residents of her sheltered housing complex clubbed together for an evening party with food and entertainment and attended by around 70 people.

Mrs Williams partied until midnight and was reported to be in fine form the next day.

"She is very interested in people and what they are doing," said her daughter Dawn. "She is very energetic, very optimistic and always thinking something new will happen around the corner."
