THE end of an era will be signalled in Cardigan at the weekend when a popular pub couple call it a day after more than 25 years.

Having made many friends over the past 25 years, calling last orders at the Hope and Anchor for the final time is likely to be tinged with sadness for Mark and Helen Lewis.

The couple started their pub careers at the former Ship Inn in the town centre where Mark’s prowess at darts brought him to the attention of the Wales selectors and he represented his country on many occasions. His 23-year-old son Jamie, who is a rising star in the Professional Darts Corporation and rated in the world top 30, also learnt his trade at the hostelry.

For more than ten years Mark and Helen have been mine hosts a stone’s throw away at the Hope where they have continued with darts – the Hope & Anchor Singles Darts League has gained a reputation as one of the best in Wales and will continue after the couple leave but at a new venue to be announced shortly.

Mark and Helen have seen many changes in the licensing trade over the years, one of the most significant the ban on smoking in pubs.

“There is no doubt that the ban hit the trade, but I think it has recovered and has been good for us for some time,” said Mark.

And licensee Helen said “It has been quite an experience over many years. There have been some excellent times and we were delighted to help various causes and charities.”

Over the years customers at the Hope have raised in excess of £10,000 for local worthy causes.

As they prepared to bow out Helen said: “We would like to say a big thank you to our loyal staff over the years and of course to the many customers who have supported us.”

The couple are staying in business in the town at a thriving printing firm they set up a few years ago which provides printing to meet all needs. They can be contacted on cardibanners@hotmail.co.uk or tel. 07771 964959.
