In a bid to make supermarkets pay more for milk and lamb local farmers in Ceredigion joined together in protest against Tesco in Cardigan.

About 20 farmers turned out to protest against the supermarkets pricing of lamb and milk. They were also demonstrating against the importation of lamb from New Zealand.

The demonstration took place on Friday, July 31 where farmers took all the milk and lamb products off the shelves and into the trolley.

But when they went to pay after all the shopping had been put through the till they refused to pay.

This left the supermarket with over 100 bottles of milk and the stores full stock of lamb to be put back.

The farmers explained that the price the supermarket pays for their produce isn’t something they can live with.

One farmer explained, that they are now getting paid half the price for lamb compared with in the past. This leaves the farmers concerned because the price that they are getting paid for produce is about the amount it takes to rear and look after an animal.

Similar protests have been taking part around the country and it has not only been Tesco which has been targeted; Morrisons, Asda and Lidl have also seen themselves come up against the UK farming community.
