A former Cardigan man took out his frustration on his relative’s doors during a binge drinking session, a court has heard.

Kyren Kaiffus Hale, aged 22, now of Cambrian Street, Aberystwyth, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and failing to surrender to court bail when he appeared before Ceredigion magistrates on Wednesday.

The court heard that Hale’s cousin Sara Jane Bowman called the police in December to report damaged doors at her Cardigan home.

Kevin Challinor, prosecuting, said: “The family were there having a nice evening, and everyone had been having a drink.

“She heard an argument and went up stairs to where her cousin was staying. She was told to get out and when she returned to the property she noticed that the doors had been broken.”

The bench was told that the damage looked like it had been caused by a hammer, and Hale had failed to appear at court last week after being released on police bail.

Peter Rhys Jones, defending, said his client had ‘quite a lengthy record’, but had been making efforts to ‘reorganise his life’.

He said: “He had an argument that night, he had been drinking whisky and in frustration he damaged the doors.

“He has offered to help with the cost of repairing the damage.”

Probation officer Julian Davies told the court Hale had informed him he had no money to travel to Aberystwyth for his previous court hearing, and had been binge drinking at the time of the offence.

Magistrates imposed a 12 month community order, with a ten day rehabilitation activity requirement and 60 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
