FORMER Cardigan RFC hooker and head coach Derek Burton humped a 50 kilogram sack of coal from Fishguard to Cardigan on Saturday in aid of a toddler suffering from Spina Bifida.

The 50-year-old building instructor at Coleg Ceredigion was joined by charity fundraisers Cardigan Cavegirls, Cardigan Coal Crew and other supporters, including Derek’s wife Cindy, to walk the 18 miles along the A487 road from the main square in Fishguard to the Guildhall in Cardigan.

The sponsored walk was held to raise funds towards the purchase of a £2,000 active user wheelchair for two-year-old Miller Harris of Beulah. The wheelchair will give the youngster more freedom.

Miller’s mother Abby told the Tivy-Side: “Miller can walk but gets very tired. I’d like to say a big thank you from the bottom of my heart to Derek and everyone who has helped.”

Derek said he wished to thank the many people who gave financial and other support.
