A LLANDYSUL man was spotted by police throwing around £270 worth of drugs out of the window of his car, magistrates have heard.

James St Ledger Grenfell, 20, of Broadwell, High Street, admitted driving while over the drug limit and possessing cannabis when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates.

Rhian Jones, prosecuting, described how police saw something being thrown from a Renault Clio as it travelled through Llandysul in the early hours of April 12.

Miss Jones said: “The vehicle was stopped and he was detained due to the strong smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle.”

A small amount of the Class B drug was found in the car, and an officer found 27.30g of cannabis which had been thrown from the vehicle.

Tests revealed Grenfell had 5.9 microgrammes of cannabis in his blood, the legal limit is 2mg.

He also had a previous conviction for possession.

Alison Mathias, defending, said Grenfell had lost his job due to the offence and had been reducing his cannabis intake.

She said: “He realises this is not the way forward.”

When he saw the police he decided to throw out the drugs, fearing he would be stopped.

Grenfell claimed he used cannabis for pain relief following a motorcycle accident and to deal with “the stresses of life”.

Magistrates sentenced him to a 12-month community order, 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 40 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay £85 costs plus a £85 surcharge, and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
