One of the Urdd National Eisteddfod's main winners this year was Ceredigion’s Lleucu-Haf Thomas - who won no fewer than 13 medals from a cross-section of categories.

These included five golds, six silvers and two bronze medals.

They included five medals in the art, design and technology awards, three in creative writing, which included a STEM project, and a music composition where she had to compose a song and accompaniment to Welsh words.

Fourteen-year-old Lleucu, a pupil at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi, also appeared on television several times during the Eisteddfod week with her five winning medals in the Eisteddfod T section.

At the end of the Eisteddfod, she also had the honour of collecting the award won by Ceredigion, the winning county, on behalf of Urdd Ceredigion's Caryl Griffiths. She was presented on stage by TV presenter Mari Lovegreen.

“That was definitely a moment that Lleucu will treasure forever,” said her mother, Meinir Thomas. ”We’re extremely proud of everything Lleucu’s achieved at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod.

"We’d also like to say a huge thank you to her teachers Caryl Griffiths, Aeres James, Islwyn Evans and Emyr James for all the support, encouragement and inspiration that they’ve given her along the way.”

Ceredigion secured a total of 152 medals, taking the lead against all other counties in Wales.

Whilst the sun shone on the Eisteddfod field in Llandovery, individuals, schools and Aelwydydd from across Ceredigion competed enthusiastically in a wide range of competitions including music, recitation, drama, dancing, poetry and literature as well as science, technology, art and vocational skills competitions.

Particular congratulations went to Elain Roberts from New Quay who secured one of the main awards of the week, the Drama Medal for those under 25.

Councillor Catrin Davies, the Cabinet member responsible for Culture, said: "To see our young people come out on top is fantastic.

"But perhaps what matters most is the opportunities the Urdd has given our young people to enjoy cultural and creative experiences not only at the Urdd National Eisteddfod but also at District and Region Eisteddfodau.

"Congratulations to our competitors, teachers and coaches and also thanks to the Urdd Officers for the inspiration."
