Parents, pupils and supporters of Ysgol Gynradd Aberteifi (YGA) gathered at The Angel Hotel in Cardigan last Saturday (September 16), when they raised over £250 for school funds.

Organised by YGA’s newly formed Friends’ Association/Cymdeithas Ffrindiau, the ‘Parents’ Get Together’ provided an opportunity for parents to get to know one another, as well as to raise vital funds for school equipment, resources and social events for the pupils.

The event saw families contributing to a commemorative mural and going head-to-head in a game of giant Jenga.

Pre-loved clothes and other items were available, as were an array of homemade cakes baked by members of the Friends’ Association and supporters of YGA.

Chair of the Friends’ Association/Cymdeithas Ffrindiau YGA, Rhian Rees, said: “It was wonderful to see parents and supporters of the school come together to raise much needed funds to help enrich pupils’ school experience.

"The committee was only established earlier this year and as this was our first event, we were naturally a bit nervous about how it would turn out and how many people would come along, so we're delighted to have raised over £250.

The committee deliberately decided not to call theselves a 'Parent Teacher Association' or PTA.

"We wanted to convey a sense of community and togetherness, so we decided on a Friends’ Association," continued Rhian.

"And we’re so glad we did this, because the response we’ve had already from the wider community has been fantastic. We’d especially like to thank Wells and Louise Jones for allowing us to hold the event at The Angel Hotel, as well as Tesco for the refreshments and all the local businesses who donated such brilliant raffle prizes."

The Friends’ Association/Cymdeithas Ffrindiau is currently establishing a 100 Club and plans are underway for other fundraising events and initiatives later in the year.

Headteacher of YGA, Donna Hanly, said: “We are very fortunate to have supportive, enthusiastic parents and friends of the school who have put all their energy into establishing ‘Cymdeithas Ffrindiau Ysgol Gynradd Aberteifi’.

"This will help us to raise vital funds to enhance the provision for our children within Ysgol Gynradd Aberteifi as well as develop our strong community links within Cardigan. We're so grateful for all the hard work, dedication, commitment and time that they have put into organising this very first official fundraising event.”
