Cardigan Secondary School pupils have had a wonderful hands-on introduction to the power of art after spending 12 days working on two murals with artist Heidi Plant.

And last Thursday the stunning murals were officially unveiled on the school’s walls.

“They really are a breath-taking testament to the collaborative spirit of our community,” commented headteacher Nicola James.

“We asked Heidi to design the mural on the theme of roots and wings – strong roots and wings to fly, which is what we hope all our pupils will have by the time they leave us and venture out into the world.

“And every stroke of the brush and every splash of colour reflects the dedication and passion that’s been poured into the subject.”

Heidi and a total of 100 students based the murals around the local area and its coastline.

The first mural depicts a vibrant seaside scene with azure waves, golden sands and ragged cliffs. Swallows can be seen swooping, which evoke feelings of taking flights and reaching that ultimate potential.

The second mural shows stable foundations through rock, plant life and trees and evokes a feeling of balance and being grounded.

“The mural not only beautifies our school but serves as a reminder of the natural wonders that surround us,” continued Nicola James. “And this inspires both creativity and a deep appreciation for our coastal home.”

The mural project was funded by the Arts Council of Wales and was completed as part of Project Aberteifi by the schools’ community partnership manager, Emily Edwards.

Meanwhile Mrs Ilar Toft, Head of Expressive Arts reminded pupils how this mural is their legacy and will stand the test of time, long after they have left school.
