After two batches of fixtures the League 1 West table makes good reading for Crymych and Newcastle Emlyn who are joint leaders.

But it is an entirely different story for Cardigan in League 2 West after a home defeat at the hands of Llanybydder left them rock bottom with no points from two outings.

Seven days after lowering the colours of Carmarthen Athletic the Preselimen sprang a 37-17 home win over Gorseinon and in the process notched four tries for a bonus point.

Gorseinon must be relieved to see the back of opposition from the far west having been beaten by Newcastle Emlyn the previous week.

It was essentially a first-rate team performance that carried the day but special mention should be made of No. 8 Joe Powell and lock Andrew Phillips.

The homesters led 10-7 at the break thanks to a try by back-rower Powell converted by scrum-half Rhys Davies who also landed a penalty.

Winger Mathew Stoneham crossed for a try for the visitors and centre Andrew Steele added the extras.

During the second period flanker Rhys ‘Beaky’ Davies, second row Gruffydd Howells and fullback Tom Turner got further tries for Crymych, all converted by scrum-half Davies and winger Callum Richards notched a try for the outplayed visitors converted by Steele who also landed a penalty.

Felinfoel hit the ground running on the opening day with a bonus point win over Whitland but the Llanelli side found Newcastle Emlyn a different proposition at Ddol Wyber where the Teifisiders were 42-19 winners.

The Red and Whites bolted into a 14-point lead but were pegged back and it was not until the second half that they asserted and emerged comfortable winners.

Emlyn got tries through wingers Llyr Jones and Dan Davies, scrum-half Owain Powell and No. 8 Brynmor Jones, all the scores converted by outside half Rhydian Harries.

Fly-half Aled Roberts went in for two tries for Felinfoel.

Following on the heels of a heavy defeat at Aberystwyth confidence was not high among Cardigan fans for the visit of Llanybydder and the pessimism was well founded as the homesters, who were without inspirational skipper Llyr Griffiths, went down 34-23.

Cardigan included on the bench young scrum-half Luke Rogers on dual registration from Narberth and when he was drafted on during the second period led the visitors a merry dance with a five-star performance. It was hardly surprising there were those who found it difficult to understand why the base-of-the-scrum operator was not on the pitch from the word go.

Llanybydder led 22-6 at the break, their points coming from tries by Alia Pelegrotti, Llyr Jones and Dyfrig Dais, two of the scores converted by Llyr Davies who also landed a penalty. Llyr Tobias was on target with two penalties for Cardigan.

After change of ends the visitors notched tries through Alun Davies and Arwyn Evans while Cardigan bounced back with scores by Alun Jenkins, Aaron Tomkinson and Dafydd Watkins.
