There were gasps of disbelief at local football watering holes as record books were ripped up after 26 goals were scored in one game.

It rained goals at Tyr Dref in Llandysul during the Costcutter Ceredigion League Reserves Cup (Division Three) game when the hosts ran out 24-2 winners against their Maesglas counterparts.

Cardigan-based Maesglas turned up with only eight players and although the missing three later arrived by then it was far too late as it rained goals.

Gary Williams led the rout with eight strikes, Scott Leask netted six, Barry Hughes, Ben Williamson, Nathan Jones and Kayne Poulton bagged a brace apiece and also on target were Martin Lewis and Dylan Williams.

As fans took in the incredible score-line a local wag said “If it had been boxing the referee would have stopped the match long before the end.”

Recalling double figure score-lines in more than 30 years as league secretary Geraint Davies said “I am quite prepared to go along with the view that this is the highest scoring match in the 68 years history of the league”
