Clwb Rhwyfo Aberteifi finished the season on a high, but the start of the season was full of frustration and disappointment. 12 members of the club had been training hard from January to April in preparation for the Celtic Challenge; the longboat race from Arklow in Ireland to Aberystwyth. The crew was firstly threatened by illness and injury, but a fortnight before the start of the race these problems were behind them. Then, just a few days before they were due to leave, the support vessel had to pull out because of illness in the skipper’s family. It was too late to find a different support boat and so sadly the crew had to cancel. The club was not disheartened for long; the frustration and all that fitness was turned into determination to compete hard in the Welsh Sea Rowing Association Longboat league. The club entered a mixed crew and a novice crew in all 11 league races which took place around the Welsh Coast from Wisemans Bridge in the South to Aberdyfi in the North. The novice crew did well, winning two of the races; the mixed crew won virtually all their races and finished the season winning both the southern league and as overall Welsh Mixed Champions. In addition the crew won 3 non-league races: the Dinas Head, the Mermaid and the PYC Wreck race. Now the club has a problem - where to keep all the trophies!
