With Cardigan Town boasting arguably the strongest squad in the club’s long history many on the local football circuit are surmising as to how much success could come the way of the Magpies in terms of the Costcutter League and various cup competitions.

In addition to a hundred per cent league record the King George V Field high-flyers have won four ties in different cup competitions hitting 28 goals and conceding only three.

The Magpies are well-served in every position from Casey Walters the former St Dogmaels goalkeeper to front-runner Kevin Morgan while players with genuine pace are causing problems for the best defences around.

Solid at the back where sweeper Steve Blackford invariably calls the tune Town have preference for playing the ball at deck level through the midfield where skipper Davies and ex-Goodwick United star James Evans can compete with the best in Mid Wales junior football.

From the middle of the park and down the flanks the ball is played to deadly striking duo Kevin Morgan the former Haverfordwest County favourite and John Lumb who has outstripped defences from the start of the campaign and also dangerous are James Bottomley, Chris Morgan and Slawomir Slovak Waleczek.

Others who have been to the fore throughout are Alun ‘Gotrel’ Williams, Rhys Davies, Aled Rees, Michael Diggle and Osian Williams.

Cardigan also have a crop of burgeoning teenagers including 16-year-old striker Louis Harding who netted twice in the recent Central Wales Cup round two demolition of Newbridge-on-Wye.

Manager Seamus Doherty who assembled the squad is quick to play down the chances of his charges getting their hands on more than one piece of silverware at the business end of the season.

“We are only in November and there is a very long way to go,” said the popular boss and added “The lads enjoy playing attractive football and it has stood them in good stead so far. But to use the old cliché we are taking it a game at a time.”

Cardigan are on the J Emrys Morgan Cup trail on Saturday against Penrhyncoch Reserves at Cae Baker and with the hosts propping up the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League having picked up just one point from six games it would take a brave man to wager against the Magpies reaching round three.

In contrast to their neighbours across town Maesglas are in the relegation mire and on current form few would give them a chance of avoiding the drop.

Since springing a 5-3 win over Llanboidy at Maes Radley in early September the Blues have lost seven on the bounce, including Saturday’s 5-0 defeat at the hands of Lampeter Town at North Road.

But despite experiencing a wretched time just now the players are giving it all they’ve got on the pitch and manager Paul ‘Hope’ Jones is a real stalwart who commands the respect of everyone at the club.
