League 2 West basement boys Cardigan opened their account for the season at the ninth time of asking with a deserved 16-10 win over mid table Tycroes at King George V Playing Field.
It was 16-0 after the opening 40 minutes and despite having their backs to the wall for most of the second period the home side defended resolutely and kicked intelligently.
During the first half skipper and backrower Llyr Griffiths led from the front and was given excellent support by his fellow forwards.
Iestyn Crompton landed three early penalties to put the homesters in the ascendancy and the lead was increased when hooker Aled Meredith went over for a try wide out. Crompton added the extras with an excellent kick from the touchline.
Fullback Carwyn Richards landed a penalty early in the second half and converted a penalty try as the visitors came back at their opponents. But the Cardis dug deep to deservedly take the verdict.
