Firing on a number of fronts Costcutter League Division One high-flyers Cardigan Town lifted their first trophy when claiming a 2-0 win over Division Two champions-elect Pencader in the League Cup Final at Aberaeron on Bank Holiday Monday.

Having safely banked the league centrepiece game silverware the Magpies now go for further glory in the J Emrys Morgan Cup, Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies, Bay Cup and league championship.

It was far from one of their better performances by Steve Blackford and Co in front of a sizeable holiday crowd but enough to start them on what could be a five-trophy haul.

Afterwards delighted Town manager Seamus Doherty said “As favourites we were there to be knocked down but the lads did a professional job.

“We knew Pencader would give it everything and so it proved – they deserve a lot of praise,” he said.

Craig Gordon and Daniel Jones impressed in midfield for Pencader but the Reds were found wanting in the final third of the pitch where Town skipper Blackford and central defender Osian Williams dominated, resulting in goalkeeper Casey Walters having a quiet afternoon.

Cardigan went ahead in the opening quarter when former Haverfordwest County front-runner Kevin Morgan exchanged passes with his brother Chris before sending an unstoppable 20-yarder into the bottom corner.

The Magpies rattled the woodwork and had two efforts cleared off the goal-line before the deciding goal midway through the second half.

Striker and leading goal-scorer John Lumb was in exactly the right spot to volley home a James Evans free kick that signalled the start of the celebrations.
