A STUNNING performance in sweeping aside title rivals Newcastle Emlyn 5-1 clinched the Costcutter League Division One title for Cardigan Town who became only the third club to complete the championship, J Emrys Morgan Cup and League Cup treble.

The others to capture all three trophies in one season were fellow townies Maesglas in season 1986-87 and Ffostrasol in 1974-75.

In front of a sizeable crowd at King George V Playing Field team of the season Cardigan ran the visitors ragged for lengthy periods and in particular during the latter part of the opening 45 minutes when at times the Reds were reduced to chasing shadows.

And the Magpies had to come from a goal down to outplay their opponents with one of the best footballing displays by a local side for many a long day.

The opening goal struck brilliantly from the edge of the penalty area by Chris Davies giving Casey Walters no chance evoked emotional scenes among visiting fans and players but the cheers were soon silenced as Steve Blackford and team-mates produced scintillating football which Emlyn had no answer to.

The rivals meet in the final of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies at Ffostrasol on Monday and on the evidence of this encounter another piece of silverware could find its way into the already bulging Town trophy cabinet.

As the Magpies turned on the style strikers Kevin Morgan and John Lumb tore the Emlyn defence to shreds and in particular the former who was pure class.

It was Morgan who created the equaliser with a superb 25-yard pass to Dylan Davies who sent an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later another flowing move involving Chris Morgan and Tom Jones set up Kevin Morgan whose volley into the top corner was sensational.

Kevin Morgan worked more magic before the break for his second goal which left the Reds with a mountain to climb. Emlyn leading marksman and former Town front-runner Peter Almond was blotted out of the game by Ben Davies who stood in for the unavailable Osian Williams at the heart of the defence.

Fifteen minutes after the restart and it was game, set and match when Rhys Davies sent in an accurate corner and Chris Morgan made it 4-1 with a flying header.

As Town continued to dominate 16-year-old substitute Iwan Jones brought the ball under control before firing into the bottom corner to make it a nap hand for his side and leave the visitors well-beaten.
