CARDIGAN Town striker John Lumb, who was outstanding during the Magpies’ unprecedented success last season when capturing five trophies, could be joining Carmarthen Town in the Welsh Premier League.

Despite being hampered by a knee injury, the 22-year-old speedy six-footer netted 41 goals in all competitions for the Costcutter League club attracting the attention of bigger clubs.

Lumb is currently on trial at Richmond Park and took part in the Old Gold’s first pre-season friendly away against Briton Ferry Llansawel Athletic of the Welsh League Division Three on Saturday.

The front-runner showed up well in a 4-2 win for Town and marked his debut with a well-taken second half goal.

Confirming that Lumb was training with Town, a spokesman said that the striker looked sharp and would take part in further friendlies before a decision was made in regard to signing him.

Town secretary Gareth Jones said that manager Mark Aizlewood was impressed with Lumb making a scoring debut, but wanted to run the rule over him for the next few weeks.

“We have a number of friendlies including a home game against Cardiff City before the first league fixture away against Airbus on Saturday, August 22, so there is plenty of time for Mark to assess the player,” he said.
