QUALITY football, excitement galore and the outcome in doubt throughout were the ingredients for a first-rate Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies round two clash between holders Cardigan Town and form side Lampeter Town at King George V Playing Field.

The Magpies showed just why they are the holders of five trophies by taking control in extra time to spring a 4-2 win over opponents who did themselves proud with a rousing performance.

Despite gluepot underfoot conditions both teams endeavoured to play a passing game and produced a spectacle that was a credit to the Costcutter League.

Lampeter started brightly and went ahead in the opening quarter when striker Luke Lovell was in exactly the right spot to poke the ball past Casey Walters.

As Cardigan came more into the game with wide player John Lumb outstanding and behind him Dylan Davies turning in another five-star performance it came as no surprise when the latter released front-runner Slawomir Slovak Waleczeck who finished with some aplomb.

With play switching from end to end during the second period it was the holders who nudged ahead when a pinpoint corner by skipper and sweeper Steve Blackford was met by Iestyn Evans whose bullet-header hit the net with goalkeeper Heulyn Jones motionless.

Refusing to capitulate the visitors squared matters when from a breakaway move winger Gethin Jones fired home.

As the game moved into extra time Cardigan’s superior fitness began to tell and after sustained pressure John Lumb left the defence for dead to regain the advantage.

The game was killed off as a serious contest when impressive teenage central midfielder Tomos Toft fired past Jones for a fourth and clinching goal.

Afterwards Cardigan manager Seamus Doherty said “It was a cracking game of football and Lampeter made it very difficult for us. The lads responded well and deserved to go through.”

ST DOGMAELS have not set the scene alight on many occasions this term but the Teifi Estuary villagers turned on the style in springing a 3-1 away win over PENPARCAU of Aberystwyth to join neighbour Town in the next round.

As the visitors ruled the roost for lengthy periods ace marksman Trefor Woodgate bagged a brace of goals and winger Tom Phillips also got in on the act.

There were alleged unsavoury scenes at the end of the game and St Dogmaels have made a complaint to the Central Wales FA.

In the same competition the gulf in class between the Costcutter first and second divisions was evidence as BARGOD RANGERS brushed aside MAESGLAS 9-2 at Parc Puw.

Striker Sam Skinner led the Rangers charge with four goals, leading marksman Robbie Jenkins improved his tally for the season with a brace, Dion Phillips also netted twice and Memo Dag opened the scoring.

As their chief Division One title rivals were engaged in cup exploits NEWCASTLE EMLYN took full advantage with a 6-0 win over visiting basement boys PENCADER to draw five points clear at the top.

Last season’s leading marksman Peter Almond was the goal-scoring hero for the Reds with a brilliant hat-trick and the other strikes came via matt Goodman, Gethin Harries and Dan Davies.
