AT the halfway stage the Swalec League 3 West A championship has developed into a three-horse race with one promotion place up for grabs.

The title race involves joint leaders Milford Haven and Cardigan and also third-placed Haverfordwest while the other seven clubs appear to be making up the numbers.

Cardigan emerged 24-10 winners at Laugharne while Milford Haven slipped to a first defeat when beaten 19-17 on their own Observatory stamping ground by arch-rivals Haverfordwest.

Milford have a game in hand on the Cardis who they host later in the season and have to make the short journey to Haverfordwest for a return clash with the Blues.

Cardigan led 17-0 after the opening 40 minutes, their points coming from tries by winger Llyr Jones, who also landed a conversion, centre Emyr Harries and scrum-half Aaron Evans.

Laugharne bounced back during the second period with two tries by scrum-half Aled Rees but centre Llyr Tobias ran in for a third Cardigan score and replacement outside half Iestyn Crompton got a fourth try for a bonus point.

The Llangennech versus Crymych game in League 1 West was postponed out of respect for the family of 42-year-old Crymych club stalwart and former player Dyfrig George of Hermon who died recently and whose funeral was held on Saturday.
