PLAYERS at a number of clubs in the Costcutter League are bracing themselves for a backlog of fixtures in the run-up to the end of the season after the wet weather struck again on Saturday and decimated league and cup programmes.

One of the worst hit by the unprecedented number of postponements are Division One champions and holders of five trophies Cardigan Town. The Easter Monday League Cup holders were forced to call off the quarter-final tie against league leaders Bargod Rangers due to a waterlogged strip at King George V Playing Field.

As well as trying to rearrange the tie for this weekend, Steve Blackford and team-mates are involved in the Central Wales Cup, J Emrys Morgan Cup, Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies, Bay Cup and also have to fit in 15 league games.

To the surprise of many the School Field pitch at St Dogmaels was fit for the Saints versus New Quay league encounter which went very much the way of the homesters who emerged 7-0 winners.

It was all over bar the shouting before the interval with Saints six goals clear and on auto pilot. Teenage front-runner Rhys Jones led the goal charge with a well-taken hat-trick and the other marksmen were Sam Rogers, Jason Williams, Adam Williams and John Curran.

Fresh from a J Emrys Morgan Cup round four win at Newcastle Emlyn, it was hardly surprising that LLANDYSUL oozed confidence for the last eight clash with visitors LAMPETER TOWN.

But in the event it was the North Road men who came up trumps in fashioning a 5-4 win after extra time.

Taking the passage to the last four was no more than impressive Lampeter deserved and with a little more steadiness in the final quarter of the pitch would not have needed the extra half hour to see off their opponents.

The visitors led 3-1 after the opening 45 minutes after dangerous raider Luke Lovell fired them ahead in the opening minutes and teenage winger Robert Slawkowski struck twice.

With both teams struggling to come to terms with gluepot underfoot conditions it was nip and tuck for the remainder of the game.

When Lovell was upended inside the box in extra time vastly experienced defender Terry Witts converted the spot kick and there was no way back for the Swallows.
