HARD-hitting Aberporth welterweight boxer Erin Lewis stormed to a sensational second-round triumph as she became only the third woman to wear Cardigan ABC colours at a packed Letterston Memorial Hall on Friday night.

Seven years after elder sister Cat Lewis took part in Ceredigion's first female bout, the tall and rangy 17-year-old won on a TKO against Pembroke ABC's Laura Edwards following a ruthless display of precision punching.

“I was told to box her from long range and let my hands go,” Lewis, a beauty student at Coleg Ceredigion, said afterwards.

“Erin made full use of her long, powerful left jab and mean right hand,” said delighted Cardigan ABC head coach Guy Croft.

“The kid kept her head even though the crowd were solidly behind Laura – it was textbook stuff and we're so proud of her.”

The raw teenager, whose two elder brothers also boxed for Cardigan, immediately dedicated victory to her grandfather – former Devon fighter Tom Geatches – who died last month.

“I was thinking about him before I got into the ring,” she revealed.

“Grandad never really liked wearing gloves in there – he never really saw the point of having a ref either!

“A massive thanks to Guy, Kev O'Sullivan, Phill, Dyfrig and all the boys down the Cardigan gym for getting me here.”
