AFTER Cardigan Town FC again stole the limelight in the Costcutter League it was the turn of the club’s youngsters when rising to the occasion and springing a 4-0 win over Dewi Stars in the Youth Cup Final at Ffostrasol.

The game was a personal triumph for striker Liam Doherty whose burgeoning talents were again in evidence as the 16-year-old hit a brilliant hat-trick and showed why bigger clubs are monitoring his progress.

Stars started brightly and in one early foray had a goal disallowed after it was adjudged the ball went out of play as it was crossed into the middle.

The young Magpies took full advantage of the let off when Doherty found himself in space on the edge of the penalty area and fired into the top corner.

Midway through the half the pacey front-runner latched onto a pass over the defence and as cool as you like drilled home a low shot.

It was virtually game, set and match before the interval when Iwan Jones cut in from the wing and there was just no stopping his low effort.

Town brought on a number of substitutes during the second period but continued to pull the strings.

It was Doherty who had the final say with as good a strike as there has been at the ground for many a long day.

Picking up the ball out on the wing he moved forward and unleashed a tremendous 25-yarder that whistled into the top corner.

It completed a great run for the striker who also netted 19 goals in 12 games for Cardigan Firsts.
